Boy, this CD hits the ground running with the upbeat New
Man Blues. And the momentum gathered on the power lead cut is never lost on
Topless as Big Daddy G (Dave Glover) uses blistering guitar to good advantage
on all 15-cuts of this sweet effort. It's hard not to like this CD with it's infectious, swinging, hot blues. Your knee twitches, and then your foot starts keeping time, your head starts bobbing, and you're into the mood. This is straight-ahead blues, but there is no headache or melancholy laments here. This is blues that says, "Yep, I just got kicked, but I ain't down. There's a big world out there and I'll make it." It's a message driven home by Daddy's guitar, and some great back-up work by the likes of Tortoise Blue, who adds a hot harp and organ along with lead vocals. Wayne "Shifty" Deadder is on electric bass and Ted Peacock plays drums. There are several great cuts here, particularly Stringbean 'n Tater, a tune Glover calls a 1960's-style instrumental with a strong nod to Freddie King. Ottawa's Tony D adds the second guitar solo for an added dash. This CD is actually liberally sprinkled with guest appearances, and that only adds to the fun. Dutch Mason offers vocal accompaniment on Nothing Left to Lose, one of the few songs that shifts down just a little in tempo. Jack de Keyzer is a vocal partner on the title track, in addition to adding a guitar solo on Topless. The tune Chicken gets the full meal deal with a tenor sax solo from Gene Hardy, a trumpet solo courtesy of William Sperandei, and vocals by Dawn Tyler Watson. Watson also adds her voice to Keep Your Head Up and Looks Good. I can't find anything here I don't like. This is just a hot blues CD that the team of Glover and Tortoise Blue have produced, with Glover having his hand in writing most of the songs here. The effort was recorded at Chalet Studios in Claremont and at the Rogue in Toronto. Topless has good times written all over it, and is thoroughly enjoyable. Mark this down as one you won't be disappointed in. Copyright 2004. Review by Calvin Daniels. |
