This CD will take you across a pond shimmering with various
shades of blue water. The boat floats, but only has a small sail. The guitar playing of Steve Hill is caffeinated, pumping out some great licks and subtle tricks. Unfortunately, it would be better if he drank de-caf because his vocals detract from the overall impact of his music. Hill does do a good job producing this CD and writing most of the original tunes. The credits are officially bilingual as well. The journey starts out with smooth sailing. Hit The Bee Flat is a fabulous Texas-style instrumental that certainly benefits from "Little" Anthony Geraci's Hammond B-3 playing. This track is fast and furious, however, too short. Belevedere Heights is a short acoustic gem with some delicate guitar picking and a tempo change mid-song that really shifts the wind. There are some songs that breeze right by like Blues Guitar Man, an average blues-rock track and So Long, Farewell, Goodbye, which is a country-pop ditty. They have too much of a commercial sound and lack the indescribable edge that comes with great blues. Peace of Mind begins with an unforetelling jazz intro leading to a typical 12-bar blues structure. This track shows promise of a more powerful gust in development. The CD features one cover, I'm a King Bee, that has some stinging harp work by another guest, Guy Belanger. There sure is plenty of guitar buzzing around that hive! Hill's playing is great, and his backing band along with a talented lineup of guest artists support him well, but the anchor is too small to keep me from drifting back to shore. Copyright 2004.
